Albrecht Durer and Franz Knigstein were starving artists. In desperation, they decided to cast lots. The winner would go to art school and the other would continue working to support him. Albrecht won the toss and became a famous artist. Franz ruined his hands doing hard manual labor. He forfeited his own artistic future out of loyalty to his friend.
One day, Albrecht found Franz on his knees, his gnarled hands clasped in prayer. Hurriedly, he sketched the moment and produced his famous etching, “Praying Hands.”
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
— John 15:13 (NIV)
Lord Jesus, help me be willing to sacrifice my goals to help my friend accomplish his. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
