Am I the only one who has a hard time dealing with criticism? It always makes me feel defensive. I handle it better now, but as a young man I often became defensive and argumentative when criticized. Stubbornly I defended myself, even when I knew I was wrong. Usually, after I had time to calm down, I would come around, but by then it was often too late. Not infrequently, my angry words wounded a fellow believer, and as the wise man notes, “An offended brother is more unyielding than a fortified city…” (Proverbs 18:19).

“He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding.”

— Proverbs 15:32 (NIV)

Lord, give me a teachable spirit and a humble heart. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
