The final plague God brought on the Egyptians was the death of all the firstborn in Egypt (Exodus 12:29-30). The Israelites would be spared if they placed the blood of a male lamb on the doorframe (Exodus 12:21-23). Being the firstborn in my family I can’t help imagining what the firstborn might have felt. Maybe he had a guilty conscience. Maybe he remembered his sinful deeds and feared he might be judged worthy of death. Imagine his relief when his father explained that the death angel would spare him, not because he was innocent, but because the blood of a perfect lamb covered his sins and protected him.

“But when he sees the blood…the Lord will pass over your home. He will not permit his death angel to enter your house and strike you down.”

— Exodus 12:23 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, may Your precious blood cleanse us of all our sins. Amen.
