True guilt—what the Bible calls conviction—leads to confession which produces forgiveness. False guilt—what the Bible calls condemnation—is toxic. It destroys our soul, sucks the very life out of us. True guilt is the work of the Holy Spirit, and it calls us to repentance. False guilt is the lie of the enemy, it shames us and drives us away from God. It is rooted in subjective feeling rather than objective fact. That is, it feels like the real thing, but it has no basis in reality.

“Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us?”

— Romans 8:33-34 (NLT)

Lord Jesus, deliver us from the lies of the enemy which condemn us. Amen.
