The day of my baby sister’s funeral has been completely erased from my memory, but I do have vivid memories of supper that evening. All the relatives and friends had gone home. Now it was just mom and dad and us three boys, and sadness, the ever-present, all-pervading sadness. I remember sitting around the kitchen table with only a small lamp for light. It sat on the kitchen counter in the corner. No overhead light that night—bright lights and grief don’t mix. A simple meal and a wordless grief that made eating nearly impossible, but even in our grief we were comforted by the promise of eternal life.

“In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”

— John 14:2-3 (NKJV)

Lord, we thank You for Your abiding presence and the promise of eternal life. Amen.
