I once ministered to a tragically tormented young woman. Although she was strikingly attractive and gifted, she lived with an overwhelming sense of worthlessness. It permeated her personality, colored her perception of life and undermined all of her relationships. The root cause of this deeply ingrained feeling and all the tragedies it birthed – three divorces, psychiatric treatment, and several suicide attempts – was a haunting childhood memory. It tormented her constantly, telling her that she was unloved and unwanted. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Jesus can heal our memories.
“And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness,…[but]the righteousness which is of God by faith: … forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”
— Philippians 3:9, 13
Lord Jesus, deliver us from our painful past with its tormenting memories. Give us a new life in Christ. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
