The Pharisees attempted to trap Jesus by asking Him whether it was right to pay tax to Caesar. If He says it is lawful He will offend many of His followers. If He says it is unlawful He will incur the wrath of Rome. Either way He is trapped or so the Pharisees thought. Jesus asked for a coin. “They brought him a denarius, and he asked them, ‘Whose image is this?…‘Caesar’s,’ they replied. Then he said to them, ‘So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s’” (Matthew 22:20-22). By utilizing a “word of wisdom” Jesus confounded those who attempted to trap Him.
