Not everyone is serious about overcoming temptation, but those of us who are serious are deeply troubled by the evil within. Again and again, we find ourselves crying from the depth of our souls, “Oh, what a terrible predicament I’m in! Who will free me from my slavery to this deadly lower nature?” (Romans 7:24 LB).
According to Romans 6 the source of our victory over temptation, whether it comes from within or without, is our identification with Jesus in His death and resurrection.
“For we know that our old self (the almighty `I’) was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.”

Lord Jesus, help us to reckon ourselves dead to sin but alive to God. Amen.
