Two parishioners were discussing their pastor’s sermon over lunch. That morning he had preached on tithing. Knowing that he was a tither, and his friend was an exceedingly generous giver, the younger man commented smugly, “Sermons on giving used to make me feel guilty but not anymore.” After a short pause the older man replied, “They always make me question if I have kept too much.” He makes me think of the generosity of the Macedonian churches.

“Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability.”

— 2 Corinthians 8:2-3 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, help us to give all we are able and even beyond our ability. Amen.
