In His infinite wisdom God designed the Sabbath to protect us from the dangers of physical exhaustion, psychological stress and the interpersonal alienation that results from the idolization of work, including the work of ministry. “Six days do your work,” He says, “but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest and the slave born in your household, and the alien as well, may be refreshed” (Exodus 23:12). According to Jesus the Sabbath was a gift from God.
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”
— Mark 2:27
Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of rest. Teach us to receive it with thanksgiving and to rest without guilt. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
