When Jesus broke the bread (1 Cor. 11:24) He was depicting the physical sufferings He would endure at the hands of sinful men. In short order He would be brutally beaten, not only as punishment for our sins, but for our physical healing as well. Isaiah declares, “…he was wounded for our transgressions…and with his stripes we are healed” (Isa. 53:5 KJV). The cup reminds us that He not only suffered for our sins, but that He died for us as well, pouring out His very life’s blood for “…without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness” (Heb. 9:22).

“It was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed…but with the precious blood of Christ.”

— 1 Peter 1:18-19 (NIV)

Lord we thank You for allowing Your body to be broken and Your blood shed for our salvation. Amen.
