When tragedy strikes, we are not only tempted to blame God but also to despair. Death is so final. There is nothing we can do to rescind it. When a loved one dies or is killed in an accident there is nothing, absolutely nothing, we can do to bring them back. We are utterly powerless to undo what death has done. And if we are not careful that sense of helplessness will give way to a numbing hopelessness. Grief will tempt us to despair, to conclude that life will never be the same again, that we will always live in this dark place. Take hope for Jesus said:

“He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

— John 11:25 (KJV)

Lord Jesus may the promise of eternal life restore our joy. Amen.
