Has your spouse wounded you? Has a trusted friend let you down? Are you harboring unforgiveness in your heart? Paul warns, “Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many” (Hebrews 12:15).
Unforgiveness gives birth to bitterness, and bitterness is not an isolated emotion directed toward one individual or one situation. It is an infection that spreads throughout the entire human psyche. It distorts your personality, colors your perception of people and events, and even affects your perception of God. Untreated, it will ravish you, leaving you old and empty, just a shell of your former self.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.”
— Ephesians 4:31 (NLT)
Lord, weed our lives tearing out bitterness by its roots. Amen.
