No one goes through life without getting hurt. Sooner or later a trusted friend will let you down or someone you looked up to will disappoint you. The temptation then is to withdraw, to nurse your hurts, vowing to never put yourself in a position to be hurt again. You can do that if you choose, but you will be the poorer because of it. C. S. Lewis says, “If you try to protect yourself from all hurt your heart will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.”
“The good-hearted understand what it’s like to be poor;
— Proverbs 29:7 (MSG)
the hardhearted haven’t the faintest idea.”
Lord help us to be good-hearted people who are willing to risk getting hurt. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
