When Elijah’s life was threatened God told him to “…hide in the Kerith Ravine…You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there” (1 Kings 17:3-4). Elijah obeyed and things went well for a time. Then the brook dried up!
So, what happened? Did God’s promises fail? Did Elijah displease the Lord in some way? Is the bone-dry brook God’s punishment? No! A thousand times no! God had another plan.
“Then the word of the LORD came to him: ‘Go at once to Zarepath…[for] I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food.’”
— 1 Kings 17:8-9 (NIV 1984)
Lord Jesus, You alone are my source—not the brook, nor the ravens, nor the widow. Those things are merely Your instruments. Help me to put my faith only in You. In Your holy name I pray. Amen.
