If you have been grievously sinned against everything within you probably cries out for justice. But justice will not release you from the prison of your pain. Justice may punish the evildoer, but it does nothing to heal the terrible wound in your soul. As the great Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt concluded, there is only one power that can stop the inexorable stream of tormenting memories: the “faculty of forgiveness.”

“You must rid yourselves of all…anger, rage, (and) malice…forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

— Colossians 3:8 and 13 (NIV 1984)

Lord Jesus, free us from all anger and every desire for revenge. Replace these toxic emotions with the healing power of forgiveness. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
