When trouble comes, we are not only tempted to blame God, but we are also tempted to blame ourselves. You will face two dangers then. One: you will be tempted to recount every godly thing you have ever done, in a misguided attempt to prove you don’t deserve the trouble that has come your way. Two: you will be tempted to remember every sinful failure and to conclude you are getting what you deserve. If you yield to either temptation, you will soon despair, for each is an exercise in futility.

But there is a third possibility—the truth of Scripture. The Bible says:

“[God] has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities.”

— Psalm 103:10 (NIV)

Lord Jesus, in the time of trouble help us to trust only in the truth of Scripture. In Your holy name we pray. Amen.
