Suffering is not a popular subject in contemporary charismatic theology. In fact, some charismatic teachers even go so far as to teach that if we walk in faith, we will never experience suffering. Unfortunately, that doctrine is based on a few “proof texts” and it ignores the full weight of Scripture. Christianity does not make us immune to the sufferings so common to this life, but it does give us the strength to live with joy and meaning no matter how severe the trial.
“Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.”
— 2 Thessalonians 1:4 (NIV)
Jesus, rather than praying to escape suffering, we pray that You will give us the strength to bear it. In Your holy name we pray, amen.
